Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - The Texas Rangers have placed third baseman Adrian Beltre on the 15-day disabled list due to a sprained left thumb he sustained on Sunday.
To take Beltre's place on the active roster, the Rangers plan to select the contract of top prospect Joey Gallo from Double-A Frisco when Texas opens its series against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday.
Beltre sustained the injury when sliding into second base in the bottom of the third inning of Sunday's 4-3 win over Boston. Though x-rays taken were negative, the four-time All-Star is expected to be out at least two weeks.
The DL stint will end Beltre's streak of 191 consecutive games played, the second-longest active run in the majors behind Atlanta's Freddie Freeman's 215.
Gallo, rated the No. 9 overall prospect by MLB.com, belted 42 home runs between Single and Double A in 2014, second only to Chicago Cubs rookie sensation Kris Bryant for tops in the minors. The slugging third baseman is hitting .314 with nine homers and 31 RBI in 34 games with Frisco this season.
The 21-year-old Gallo had a 40-homer season in 2013 and cracked 22 in just 59 games during his professional debut the previous year.
