Nurnberg, Germany – Top-seeded and former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic was a semifinal upset victim Friday at the hands of Germany's Andrea Petkovic at the inaugural clay-court Nurnberger Versicherungscup tennis event.
The heavy crowd favorite and former top-10 star Petkovic ousted the Serbian Jankovic, a quarterfinalist last week at the French Open, 6-4, 6-3 on the red clay at Nurnberg Tennis Club.
The 25-year-old Petkovic, a native of the former Yugoslavia who has been on the mend following a series of injuries over the last two seasons, will now appear in her sixth career WTA final, seeking a third title and her first championship since 2011.
The winner of this $235,000 tournament will claim $42,600.
