Foxboro, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - The New England Patriots officially signed defensive end Andre Carter on Wednesday.

Carter had 10 sacks in 14 games for the Patriots in 2011 before a lackluster 2012 campaign when the 34 year-old registered just 2 1/2 sacks in 12 games with the Raiders. He has not played this season after his release from Oakland in August.

The California product has recorded 513 tackles and 78 1/2 sacks in 175 career games with the 49ers (2001-05), Redskins (2006-10), Patriots (2011) and Raiders (2012).

New England has lost defensive lineman Vince Wilfork and linebacker Jerod Mayo for the season.

The Patriots also signed defensive tackle Sealver Siliga to the practice squad and released cornerback Travis Howard from the practice squad.
