Green Bay, WI – The Green Bay Packers have ruled out linebacker Clay Matthews for Sunday's game against Detroit due to a hamstring injury the star pass rusher suffered in the team's last outing.
Matthews got hurt in the third quarter of Green Bay's 31-17 victory over Arizona on Nov. 4, with head coach Mike McCarthy stating during the Packers' recent bye week that the sack artist could be sidelined "a couple of weeks."
McCarthy officially declared Matthews unavailable for the Detroit game following Wednesday's practice.
Matthews has recorded a team-best nine sacks through the first nine games, the fifth-highest total in the NFL this season.
McCarthy had better news regarding wide receiver Jordy Nelson, who appears on track to return from an ankle sprain that knocked him out of the Week 9 win over the Cardinals in the first quarter. The fifth-year pro did participate in Wednesday's practice on a limited basis.
Nelson, who leads Green Bay with 532 receiving yards on 40 catches, had missed a week due to a hamstring strain prior to injuring his ankle against Arizona.
Fellow wide receiver Greg Jennings is expected to remain sidelined as he continues to recover from groin surgery, while veteran defensive back Charles Woodson will miss a third straight game due to a fractured collarbone he sustained back in Week 7.
