Ottawa Senators acquire forward Nikita Filatov on Day 2 of NHL draft

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Ottawa Senators continued to retool on Day 2 of the NHL draft.

After making three picks in the first round, general manager Bryan Murray acquired Russian forward Nikita Filatov from the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday for a third-round pick before drafting Ottawa 67's centre Shane Prince at No. 61.

Filatov, who was drafted sixth overall by the Blue Jackets in the 2008 draft, had seven assists in 23 games with Columbus last season.

"It's a no-lose for us," Murray said. "We're going to give him every chance, he deserves that."

Filatov, a 21-year-old left-winger, has six goals and seven assists in 44 career NHL games. The six-foot, 190-pound Moscow native also spent time in the Kontinental Hockey League, scoring nine goals and 13 assists with CSKA Moscow in 26 games in the 2009-2010 season.

Columbus used the 66th pick acquired in the deal to select centre Thomas Tynan of Des Moines of the USHL.

Murray was busy on Day 1 of the draft as well. The Senators took centre Mika Zibanejad with the sixth pick and followed that up by taking Plymouth Whalers right-winger Stefan Noesen at No. 21 and Peterborough Petes left-winger Matt Puempel at No. 24.

The 21st selection was acquired as part of the mid-season trade that sent Mike Fisher to Nashville, while Ottawa got the 24th pick after dealing the 35th and 48th selections on the draft floor to the Detroit Red Wings.

Prince finished second on the 67's and second among draft-eligible players in the Ontario Hockey League in scoring with 88 points (25 goals, 63 assists) in 59 games.

Just the third 67's player drafted by the Senators, Prince was near the top of the OHL scoring race before his season was cut short by injury.

The Senators also kept it local in the fourth round, taking Gatineau Olympiques centre Jean-Gabriel Pageau at No. 96. The Ottawa native had 32 goals and 47 assists for Gatineau in the 2010-'11 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League season.

The Senators took Swedish defenceman Fredrik Claesson in the fifth round with the 126th pick before selecting centre Darren Kramer of the Western Hockey League's Spokane Chiefs in the sixth round at No. 156.

Left-winger Max McCormick of Sioux City then went to Ottawa with the 171st pick.

The seventh round saw the Senators take Brandon Wheat Kings defenceman Jordan Fansoo at No. 186 and American centre Ryan Dzingel at No. 204. Dzingel plays for Lincoln of the USHL.
