AC Milan's Mathieu Flamini is expected to miss five months with a knee injury, the Italian club announced Friday.

Flamini, 27, suffered cruciate ligament damage during a friendly against rival Juventus on Sunday. The experienced midfielder will miss the first half of the Serie A season and the Champions League group stage.

Milan will have some time to adjust to the loss of the French international, a former Marseille and Arsenal player, after Serie A delayed the start of its season due to a players' strike this weekend.
