Latvian hockey player sanctioned by IOC

Lausanne, Switzerland (SportsNetwork.com) - Latvian hockey player Ralfs Freibergs was disqualified from the 2014 Olympics after testing positive for a banned substance.

The International Olympic Committee made the announcement Friday.

According to the IOC, Freibergs provided a urine sample on Feb. 22 and the results indicated a prohibited substance.

Freibergs became the third hockey player, and second from Latvia, involved in a doping offense. Vitalijs Pavlovs was the other Latvian disqualified.

Sweden's Nicklas Backstrom missed the gold medal game against Canada after testing positive for a banned substance found in an allergy medication. He was allowed to keep his silver medal after an IOC disciplinary commission said there was no indication he was trying to cheat, taking into account his cooperation and the fact he was told by a Swedish team doctor it was OK to take the medication.
