New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Former Louisville guard and younger brother of Knicks' shooting guard J.R. Smith, Chris Smith, has made the New York Knicks.

The Knicks cut five players on Friday, including four-year NBA veteran Chris Douglas-Roberts. Forwards C.J. Leslie, Ike Diogu, Josh Powell and Jeremy Tyler were also waived by New York.

Smith, considered a long-shot to make the roster, scored just three points in 20 minutes this preseason. He appeared in three games.

Knicks head coach Mike Woodson admitted earlier this week that Smith's chances of making the team were boosted by the presence of his older brother, who averaged 18.1 points per game and won the NBA's sixth man of the year award a season ago.

New York has until Monday, Oct. 28 at 5:00 ET to finalize its opening day roster. If Smith is not cut by then, his 2013-14 contract will be guaranteed.
