PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Anthony Kim has had surgery on his left thumb that will keep him out of the U.S. Open and possibly the British Open this summer.
Kim underwent surgery Wednesday in Baltimore, one day after pulling out of The Players Championship.
The doctor who operated on Kim said he suffered a partial tear of his ligament months ago. It reached a point where Kim could no longer compete at a high level. Kim says compensating for the pain was leading to other problems, such as a sore shoulder.
He is expected to be out for 10 to 12 weeks.
If the rehabilitation goes well, that could put him back in time for the British Open in July. Kim is No. 2 in the Ryder Cup standings, and the top eight qualify after the PGA Championship in August.
