Nuremberg, Germany (SportsNetwork.com) - Top-seeded German crowd favorite Angelique Kerber went by way of an upset, while second-seeded Eugenie Bouchard moved into the semifinals at the Nurnberger Cup tennis event, a final clay court French Open tune-up.

Czech Karolina Pliskova dismissed the left-handed top-10 star Kerber 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, while the Canadian Bouchard snuck past Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (8-6) on Day 5.

Thursday's other quarterfinals saw fourth-seeded Ukrainian Elina Svitolina top German Mona Barthel 6-4, 6-4 and Italian Karin Knapp come from behind to cut down seventh-seeded Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia 6-7 (9-11), 6-4, 6-4.

Friday's semifinals will pit Bouchard against Knapp and Svitolina versus Pliskova.
