John Parker Wilson and Curtis Painter begin preseason at the bottom of the quarterback depth charts for the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants.

They hope the climb out of the basement starts on Saturday when the two teams meet in the exhibition opener.

Wilson is behind second-stringer Bruce Gradkowski and rookie Landry Jones. Painter, who started eight games in Indianapolis in 2011, is fighting rookie Ryan Nassib for a spot behind Eli Manning and David Carr.

Wilson and Painter expect to get their most extensive playing time of the preseason on Saturday night. Wilson says he's not going to try to be a hero and do something out of the ordinary to impress coaches. Painter says his preparation is just as important as how he plays.
