NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New York Islanders acquired the rights to Vancouver Canucks defenseman Christian Ehrhoff for a 2012 fourth round draft pick, the NHL team said on Tuesday.

But the clock is ticking on the Islanders who will now have three days to work out a deal with Ehrhoff before he becomes an unrestricted free agent on Friday.

The German blueliner had 14 goals and 50 points this season for the Canucks, who reached the Stanley Cup finals before losing to the Boston Bruins in Game Seven.

A fourth round pick of the San Jose Sharks in the 2001 draft, Ehrhoff has 53 goals and 226 points in 500 career games.
