East Rutherford, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Giants have officially announced the addition of three unrestricted free agents, running back Rashad Jennings and offensive linemen Geoff Schwartz and J.D. Walton.
Multiple outlets reported New York's agreements with Jennings, who led the Oakland Raiders in rushing last season, and Schwartz during Tuesday's start of the NFL calendar year.
Additionally, the Giants retained three holdovers from last year's team in running back Peyton Hillis, cornerback Trumaine McBride and backup quarterback Curtis Painter.
Jennings, who signed a four-year, $14 million deal according to NJ.com, is coming off the best season of his five-year career. The soon-to-be 29-year-old totaled 733 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 163 carries, while adding 36 catches for 292 yards in 15 games with the Raiders.
A seventh-round pick of Jacksonville in the 2009 draft, Jennings has averaged 4.3 yards per carry and recorded 97 receptions over 53 career games with the Jaguars and Raiders.
With 2012 first-rounder David Wilson's status for the upcoming season uncertain due to a serious neck injury, the Giants also added an insurance policy for the backfield in Hillis, a 1,000-yard rusher for Cleveland in 2010 who tallied 247 yards and two touchdowns over seven games after joining New York in midseason.
Schwartz, a five-year veteran who made seven starts at right guard for Kansas City in 2013, signed a reported four-year, $16.8 million contract with $6.2 million guaranteed. The 6-foot-6, 340-pound lineman owns 26 career starts and is expected to take over at left guard next season.
Walton started all 16 games at center for the Denver Broncos in each of his first two NFL seasons (2010-11) but has played in just four contests over the last two years due to injuries. His signing comes on the same day the Giants officially waived starting center David Baas with a failed physical designation.
McBride started a career-high 10 games in an injury-plagued secondary for New York last season, his first with the Giants. The 28-year-old posted 32 tackles, two interceptions and 15 passes defensed.
