Furyk leads by 1 with 9 to go at U.S. Open

San Francisco, CA – Jim Furyk has played the first nine holes Sunday at the 112th U.S. Open at 1-over par and leads by one stroke with nine holes to play.

Furyk, the 2003 champion, has posted eight pars and a lone bogey on the sixth.

Webb Simpson bounced back from bogeys on the second and fifth with four birdies in his next five holes to climb within one stroke of Furyk. Simpson, who is two groups ahead of Furyk, stands at 1-over par.

First-round leader Michael Thompson carded a 3-under 67 and is the leader in the clubhouse at 2-over-par 282. John Peterson, the 2011 NCAA individual champion, who is 1-under after 14 holes, is also at 2-over par

Graeme McDowell, who shared the lead with Furyk entering the final round, had three bogeys in a four-hole span from the third. The 2010 champion also bogeyed the ninth to make the turn tied for fifth at 3-over par.

Two-time champion Ernie Els eagled the short par-4 seventh to move within two of Furyk, but he bogeyed his next two holes to tumble to 3-over par.

Padraig Harrington, a three-time major champion, is also 3-over for the championship. He is 2-under through 16 holes of his final round.

Three-time champion Tiger Woods was 6-over through his first six holes on Sunday at The Olympic Club. He has gotten two shots back, but he is well off the pace at 8-over par.

Phil Mickelson, a five-time runner-up, failed to make a birdie in the final round. He shot 8-over 78 with eight bogeys and 10 pars. He finished the championship at 16-over-par 296.

Amateur Beau Hossler is clinging to his low amateur status. He is 3-over par for his round and has dropped to 6-over par for the championship.

Fellow amateur Jordan Spieth is in the clubhouse at 7-over-par 287 after closing with an even-par 70.

In the previous four U.S. Opens at The Olympic Club, no 54-hole leader has held on to won the title.
