RUSTENBURG, South Africa (Reuters) - England captain Rio Ferdinand has been ruled out of the World Cup after suffering a knee injury in training on Friday, the English Football Association said.

The 31-year-old defender sustained the injury in the final minutes of England's first major training session in South Africa. He later hobbled out of hospital on crutches. He will be out of action for four to six weeks, the FA said in a statement on their website (www.thefa.com).
