Los Angeles, CA – The Los Angeles Dodgers designated left- handed pitcher Ted Lilly for assignment on Thursday.
Lilly, 37, was 0-2 with a 5.09 ERA in five starts with the Dodgers this season. The left-hander was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday when Matt Kemp was placed on the DL.
Lilly last pitched for the Dodgers on June 4, when he was tagged for five runs -- four earned -- on six hits over four frames in a no-decision against San Diego. He went on the DL the next day with a neck strain. He made two rehab starts with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga, where he went 1-1 with a 10.80 earned run average.
Lilly was acquired by the Dodgers as a part of a five-player trade with the Chicago Cubs on July 31, 2010 and then re-signed by the club to a three-year free-agent contract after the 2010 campaign. He posted a 24-21 record with a 3.83 ERA in 58 starts during his four years with Los Angeles.
To replace Lilly on the roster, the Dodgers recalled infielder/outfielder Elian Herrera from Triple-A Albuquerque.
In 80 games at Triple-A Albuquerque this season, Herrera is batting .290 with six home runs, 40 RBI and 14 stolen bases.
The 28-year-old has appeared in only three games during two stints for the Dodgers this season, going 2-for-7, while making two starts in left field.
