Former FIFA president Joao Havelange is improving from a serious ankle infection that has kept him in the hospital for almost two weeks.

The Samaritano Hospital said in a statement Friday that the 95-year-old Havelange's health still requires close attention, but he is in stable condition and "responding well to treatment."

Havelange was admitted to the hospital in Rio de Janeiro on March 18.

Doctors said Thursday they drained Havelange's ankle for the second time in an attempt to control the infection.
