Grindelwald, Switzerland – A Canadian skier died following a crash Saturday during a World Cup race in Switzerland.
Nick Zoricic crashed into safety netting near the finish line of a ski cross heat and was pronounced dead after being airlifted to a hospital. He was 29.
The International Ski Federation said Zoricic died of "severe neurotrauma."
The remainder of the event Saturday was canceled, as was the World Cup Final on Sunday.
"Our thoughts are first and foremost with Nick's parents and his family," said Max Gartner, president of Alpine Canada. "Nick was a very talented young ski racer and a great athlete who was much loved by his teammates and fellow competitors. He will be greatly missed by all of us and the ski community as a whole."
Zoricic was racing close to two other competitors as they crossed over the final jump in front of the finish line. Zoricic's jump took him wide right of the gate, however, where he crashed hard into the safety netting.
His death comes two months after another Canadian freestyle skier died from injuries sustained in a training accident. Sarah Burke, who was also 29, passed away Jan. 19, a little more than a week after her crash.
