Cal Poly football coach Tim Walsh has named junior Vince Moraga as the starting quarterback for the Mustangs' Aug. 31 season opener against San Diego.

Moraga spent the last two seasons as a backup to starter Andre Broadous. Moraga beat out sophomore Chris Brown, redshirt freshman Tanner Trosin and Air Force sophomore transfer Dano Graves for the starting job.

In a Cal Poly scrimmage on Saturday, Moraga completed 4-of-6 pass attempts for 30 yards, while rushing for eight yards on six carries.

"The difference between one and four is not that much, nor is there much difference between two and three," Walsh said. "It's still a work in progress. All four guys have been fighting throughout the spring and fall, but this was the right time to make a decision."

Cal Poly was part of a three-way tie for the Big Sky Conference title last season, finishing 9-3 overall.
