Philadelphia, PA – The top-seed Virginia Tech Hokies rebounded from a tough loss in the opening round of the Blacksburg Regional to post a convincing 9-1 victory over the third-seed Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.
Devin Burke pitched a complete game and allowed just a single run on five hits to earn the win and Chad Pinder and Andrew Rash each homered for Virginia Tech (39-21). Pinder was 2-for-5 with two RBI in the game while Rash had three hits and drove in three.
Jacob May went 2-for-4 with a home run that accounted for the entirety of the Chanticleers' (37-23) offensive output. Coastal Carolina was eliminated from the double-elimination regional.
It took 12 innings but the Oklahoma Sooners were finally able to advance to the regional final with a 5-3 win in extra innings over the Connecticut Huskies.
Max White hit an RBI triple with one out and would later score on a throwing error in the top of the 12th inning to carry Oklahoma (42-19) to the win. White went 2-for-6 in the contest with one of just two extra-base hits by the Sooners. Kyle Hayes earned the win by pitching the final 2 1/3 innings without allowing a run.
Tom Verdi went 3-for-6 with two runs scored and L.J. Mazzilli, Vinny Siena and Bobby Melley each had an RBI for UConn (35-27). Jordan Tabakman pitched the first nine innings for the Huskies but Pat Butler took the loss by allowing the two runs in the 12th inning.
On Sunday UConn will face Virginia Tech, a team they bested 5-2 on Friday, in an elimination game. The winner of that contest will play Oklahoma later in the day in the regional final.
