Bailey on 60-day DL as BoSox set roster

Boston, MA – The Boston Red Sox made a slew of roster moves on Wednesday in order to square away their Opening Day roster.

Pitcher Andrew Bailey was placed on the 60-day disabled list, after it was learned on Tuesday that he will require surgery to reconstruct the ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb.

The 27-year-old right-hander was dealt to the Sox from Oakland in late December, then signed to a one-year deal in January which avoided arbitration. He was 0-4 with a 3.24 earned run average and converted 24 saves in 42 games for the A's last year.

Reliever Chris Carpenter (right elbow surgery), who was with the Cubs last season, was also placed on the 60-day DL, as was outfielder Ryan Kalish (left shoulder surgery).

Three more hurlers -- Rich Hill (left elbow surgery), Daisuke Matsuzaka (right elbow surgery) and Andrew Miller (left hamstring strain) -- along with outfielder Carl Crawford (left wrist surgery) were placed on the 15-day DL.

In addition, infielder Pedro Ciriaco and outfielder Jason Repko were assigned to Triple-A Pawtucket, while catcher Daniel Butler was sent to Double-A Portland.

Finally, the Sox selected the contracts of pitchers Scott Atchison, Vicente Padilla and Justin Thomas.

Boston begins its 2012 regular season in Detroit on Thursday.
