Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom was suspended for one game for his actions during a Monday contest against Boston.

The 24-year-old Swede was given a match penalty for attempting to injure Bruins forward Rich Peverley at the buzzer of a 4-3 Boston victory in Game 3 of that Eastern Conference quarterfinal at Verizon Center.

Backstrom approached Peverley and cross-checked his opponent in the head.

Game 4 of the series, led by the defending champions two games to one, remains in America's capital on Thursday.
