CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay has hired Derek van der Merwe as athletic director.
The school announced the hiring of van der Merwe (meer) at a news conference Wednesday on campus. He had been Central Michigan's deputy athletics director and chief operating officer. He replaces Dave Loos, who resigned as athletic director in April but remains the men's basketball coach.
After playing football at Central Michigan as an offensive lineman from 1991-95, van der Merwe joined the school's athletic department in 1997 as an academic adviser. As deputy athletic director, van der Merwe's responsibilities at Central Michigan included oversight of facilities, events, summer camps, business operations, communications, the Chippewa Athletic Fund, corporate sales and marketing. He also was the primary administrator for softball, wrestling, men's basketball and football.
