(SportsNetwork.com) - The Oakland Athletics will send young star Sonny Gray to the mound Saturday in hopes he can handle the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.
Gray picked up his sixth win of the season Sunday against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The 24-year-old right-hander will try to make it four victories in a row as he hits the hill Saturday.
Gray went 6 2/3 innings in his Athletics' 6-3 victory over the Angels. He was charged with all three runs and seven hits, but managed to fan five batters and allow just three walks.
On the season, Gray is 6-1 with an impressive 2.45 earned run average and a 1.15 WHIP. He's struck out 65 batters, walked 27 and allowed just five home runs to opponents. The 2011 first-round draft pick by Oakland has faced Baltimore once in his career, in which he gave up six earned runs on eight hits in 3 1/3 innings.
The Orioles will counter with a youngster of their own. They'll send 23-year- old Kevin Gausman out to face the streaking Athletics. Gausman will be making his second appearance and second start for the O's. He was brought up from Triple-A Norfolk after Chris Tillman slid up in the rotation.
Gausman's one appearance this season was a short one. He pitched four innings on May 14 against Detroit, in which he surrendered five earned runs on six hits in four innings of work. His ERA on the season stands at a whopping 11.25, which he'll look to correct against the A's.
The Athletics needed two extra innings Friday night to get things done in Baltimore in the first leg of a three-game series, but improved to a major league-best 21-11 on the road in the 4-3 win.
Tommy Milone got the start for Oakland, and went six innings while giving up three runs. The Orioles held a 3-2 lead when Milone was chased from the game. Josh Donaldson and Derek Norris each sent solo home runs into the stands in the first and second innings, respectively.
"We don't give up until the last out is made," Milone said. "You see if in the last few games, it seems like we're always in every game, and we find ways to win."
Baltimore eventually took the lead on a Manny Machado homer to center in the fifth inning. In the eighth, Yoenis Cespedes doubled to score Coco Crisp and knotted the score at three apiece, sending it to extras. A Stephen Vogt single to left scored John Jaso in the 11th, and Sean Doolittle closed the contest in the bottom of the inning on the mound for his eighth save of the season.
Fernando Abad earned the victory for Oakland - his first of the season - in a relief effort, while Evan Meek picked up his second loss of the year in his one inning pitched.
The Orioles dropped to 11-13 at home this season with the loss.
