A's rip Mariners

Oakland, CA – Cliff Pennington smacked a three-run homer and run double, leading the Oakland Athletics to a 2 drubbing of the Seattle Mariners in the opener of a three-game series.

Scott Sizemore had two hits, including an RBI single, and Brandon Allen collected the other RBI for the A's, who have won back-to-back games after dropping five straight.

Guillermo Moscoso (7-8) worked seven effective innings, giving up two runs -- one earned -- on five hits while striking out six and issuing only one walk.

Franklin Gutierrez and Brendan Ryan drove in runs and Casper Wells added a double for the Mariners, losers in six of their last eight contests.

Jason Vargas (7-13) was saddled with the loss after giving up five runs -- four earned -- on six hits while fanning four and walking four.
