Ajax took a big step toward retaining its Eredivisie title on Sunday with a 2-0 home win over Groningen that moves the club six points clear at the top of the league with three games to play.

The hosts went ahead in first-half stoppage time with a goal from Derk Boerrigter, while Kolbeinn Sigthorsson sealed the win 10 minutes from time with his seventh goal of the campaign to give the Amsterdam side its 11th successive victory.

Groningen remains in the bottom half of the table but has already secured its place in the top flight for next season.

AZ Alkmaar moves into second place after a 2-1 win over Venlo that saw Jozy Altidore net the winning goal in the 65th minute, while Feyenoord joins AZ on 61 points after a 2-1 triumph at Den Haag with Ruben Schaken and Guyon Fernandez scoring goals before a late penalty kick from Lex Immers pulled one back for the home side.

PSV Eindhoven needed a second-half rally to come from a goal down against NEC in Sunday's other match as Jetro Willems equalized in the 68th minute before the winning goal arrived two minutes from time courtesy of Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink.
