A Democratic California congressman is encouraging the House to bar people on the FBI's terrorist watch list to purchased guns, claiming those who are on the list in error can appeal.
"Some people shouldn't have guns. Terrorists are at the top of that list," Rep. Mike Thompson wrote in a USA Today op-ed. "However, a loophole in federal law allows those on the FBI's terrorist watch list to walk into a gun store, pass a background check and leave with weapons. We know that this loophole is being exploited."
Citing data from the Government Accountability Office, Thompson reminded readers that since 2004, suspected terrorists have purchased guns in the United States more than 2,000 times.
Thompson recognized that many people criticize his bill to to close the loophole because so many people are "wrongly put" on the list. In response, Thompson claimed that he was working to establish an appeals process so someone wrongly placed on the list can easily be removed. But, supporters of Second Amendment rights said there should be due process getting on to the terror watch list, rather than getting off of it.
