Comedian Bill Maher has found something rather unexpected, if not somewhat bizarre – a link between Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and the communist revolutionary Ernesto “Che” Guevara.
On Sunday, Maher said in a CNN interview that the GOP candidate’s most loyal followers would continue to support Trump no matter what he says or does. He believes there will be a civil war, of sorts, if Trump loses the election.
A loss would turn Trump into a martyr – the “Che Guevara of 'deplorables,'" Maher said. "I think he’s going to be a revolutionary out there."
The Argentine-born Guevara was a Marxist revolutionary who fought alongside Fidel Castro during the Cuban Revolution. After coming to power, Castro gave Guevara various political positions.
Last month, Hillary Clinton said at a campaign appearance, "You can put half of Trump supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? Racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic, you name it."
She apologized for the comments the following day, but Maher didn't seem to have any problem belittling Trump supporters with the term.
The comedian said that the broad level of support the real estate mogul commands exposes that “there are a lot of vulgar, tacky, racist people in this country. More than I thought – I knew there were some.”
Maher added, “I know they hate that term, but if the basket fits — and it does.”
Guevara, who continued his involvement in guerrilla warfare in Africa and other countries in Latin America, was executed by military forces in Bolivia in 1967.
