The number of unique names on the U.S. terror watch list totals 400,000, newly released FBI data reveals.

The Washington Post reported that during a 12-month period ending in March of this year, 1,600 people were nominated daily by the U.S. intelligence community to be put on the list due to 'reasonable suspicion.'

Each day, 600 names were also reportedly asked to be removed and 4,800 records be modified.

FBI officials, however, said each suggestion "does not necessarily represent a new individual, but may instead involve an alias or name variant for a previously watchlisted person."

The data, which also showed that less than 5 percent of people on the list were U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents, was provided to the Senate Judiciary Committee in September.
