Time Magazine 'Covers' Undocumented Immigrants

"We are Americans."

That's the headline of the cover of this week's edition of TIME Magazine which showcases the plight and success stories of undocumented immigrants in the United States.

The cover photo features a crowd of 36 undocumented immigrants led by José Antonio Vargas, a Washington Post Pulitzer Prize, Filipino journalist that revealed he was in the United States illegally in June of 2011.

Vargas wrote the story about the nation's 12 million undocumented immigrants which is supposed to lay out "why we are done hiding."

“They’re living in America—but only in the shadows,” said Gian Paul Lozza, a photographer for the TIME cover story about undocumented immigrants. “They’re very much in the dark.”

Illegal immigration has largely been regarded as a Latino issue, but Lozza wanted to make sure those showcased in the story were from all backgrounds.

“We wanted to bring that diversity to the light. This is not just a problem for Latinos, as we hear about often, but for every culture from around the world.”

The story showcases a photo gallery of undocumented immigrants including quotes about their aspirations - their American Dreams.

Erika Andiola, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, has a bachelors degree in psychology.

"I know one day I will run for office in the state of Arizona," she said.

Daniela Bravo from Chile said, "I want to be an evolutionary anthropologist."

Tatevik Keshishyan of Armenia and recent graduate of Boston University said, "I want to help find the cure for cancer."

This TIME cover comes nearly four months after the venerable news magazine ran a high profile cover story about Latino voter power. In February, the headline read "Yo Decido. Why Latinos will pick the next President.”

The cover, which featured the faces 24 Latinos, made headlines when it was discovered one of the participants was not Latino at all.

TIME magazine quickly apologized.
