Fast food is getting faster as McDonald’s rolls out a new drive-thru program that aims to get the meal to the customer in 60 seconds or less.
The Miami Herald reports that participating McDonald’s in South Florida are testing a limited-time 60-second guarantee for customers who place lunch orders at the drive-thru between noon and 1 p.m. Drive thru customers will receive a timer with their receipt, and after a minute is up, patrons who have not yet received their meal will get a free lunch item on their next visit to McDonald’s.
The countdown doesn't start until after you've paid for your meal, so wait times at participating locations might not be worth the hassle.
Last year, QSR magazine reported that McDonald’s drive-thurs had an average wait time over three minutes. The new program could be a test aimed at improving nationwide drive-thru speed, or a way to stay competitive during the lunch rush as chains like Chipotle and fast casual joints encroach on the space, according to Time. Speedy lunch wars could be the new fast food breakfast wars.
On the other hand, the possibility of a free sandwich coupon could simply be a way to drive up business during the designated hour. Mcdonald's is only offering the 60-second rush special until Aug. 29.
