Former Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev has been released from a hospital and is already back at work, a Russian news site reported Friday.
In an interview with RIA Novosti Friday, Gorbachev said he had left the hospital but acknowledged his health problems are still an issue.
“If I could reach the party assessment of ‘satisfactory’, that would be great. I have arrived at work, that is already not bad,” Gorbachev told RIA.
The former Russian president, 83, was hospitalized Thursday after experiencing deteriorating health due to what he called a “disease recurrence.”
Gorbachev, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990, said his current illness has kept him from following the Nobel week. He suffers from a severe form of diabetes and has reportedly received treatment at German hospitals in recent years.
He was the first and last president of the Soviet Union, resigning in late 1991 after 11 of the former Soviet Republics established the Commonwealth of Independent States, effectively ending the USSR.
