Clinton says US will disclose specific number of weapons in nuclear arsenal
UNITED NATIONS – UNITED NATIONS (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says the Obama administration will disclose the number of weapons it holds in its nuclear arsenal, a closely guarded secret for more than a half-century.
Clinton told a U.N. conference on Monday that the move is aimed at improving transparency in the nuclear disarmament regime and encouraging other nations to comply with it. U.S. officials said the detailed accounting of the arsenal was expected to be released later Monday in Washington.
The officials said the decision had been opposed by some in the military and intelligence communities over concerns that it could compromise America's national security. Clinton's announcement came on the opening day of a monthlong United Nations conference reviewing the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.
