A woman has pleaded guilty to kidnapping her infant daughter from South Carolina and fleeing overseas more than 20 years ago.

Dorothy Lee Barnett, formerly of Isle of Palms, pleaded guilty in federal court in Charleston on Tuesday to parental kidnapping and two counts of falsifying U.S. passport applications.

U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel sentenced Barnett to 21 months in prison, followed by two years of supervised parole. Barnett will get credit for the time served since her arrest in November 2013.

Prosecutors say Barnett did not have custody when she took her daughter, who was almost a year old, from South Carolina in 1994.

Barnett was located in Australia in 2013 living under several aliases. She fought extradition but was returned to the United States last September.
