A fire truck that carried 11 firefighters to the World Trade Center for what would prove to be their last assignment is returning to Staten Island for the first time in more than a year.

The Staten Island Advance (http://bit.ly/16yWBgU ) reports that the Rescue Co. 5 truck is to be the centerpiece of a fund-raising event Aug. 25.

The firefighters used the truck to rush to ground zero to respond to the Sept. 11 terror attacks. Eleven died.

The truck later became a mobile memorial for the Chicago-based Remembrance Rescue Project. The nonprofit group aims to help children understand 9/11.

Some Rescue 5 firefighters are heading to Akron, Ohio, to drive the truck back to Staten Island.

The rig will leave Sept. 2 for trips to other cities.
