DALLAS – Four San Antonio women imprisoned for sexually assaulting two girls in 1994 could soon walk free.
Bexar County prosecutor Rico Valdez told The Associated Press on Friday that he and an attorney for the "San Antonio 4" agree the convictions should be vacated due to faulty testimony. A judge on Monday could allow the women to post bond while the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals considers overturning their convictions.
Three of the women remain behind bars. The fourth was paroled last year.
They were convicted in 1998 based on an expert's testimony that vaginal injuries sustained by a 9-year-old girl could have been caused by an assault. Valdez and the women's attorney, Mike Ware, agree the testimony wouldn't stand today.
One girl has recanted her testimony.
