The great American writer William Faulkner once wrote, “To understand the world, you must first understand a place like Mississippi.”

From muddy expanse of Delta cotton fields to the dense forests of the Pines, Mississippi's diverse regions are ripe with history. One of Mississippi's greatest historical legacies is the blues. The blues originated in Mississippi at the end of the 19th century and went on to influence every other genre of American music, such as country, rock and roll, jazz, and pop.

In 2005, the Mississippi Blues Commission created The Mississippi Blues Trail, a geographic tribute to the roots of modern American music. The commission placed markers at the most notable sites related to the growth of the blues. With over one hundred markers in eight different states, The Mississippi Blues Trail offers tourists the opportunity to see where American music was born.
