NEW YORK (AP) — Soccer fans have jammed bars, restaurants and streets across New York to celebrate the start of the World Cup.

Supporters arrived early to watch the matches — and to get a seat.

Brooklyn restaurant Madiba's was a haven for South African fans. Supporters wore national team jerseys and sang songs in Zulu to celebrate the 1-1 draw with Mexico.

Clad in a yellow South African jersey, Johannesburg native Neil Solomon says being in New York is the "best alternative" to being at home.

At the "Puma City" soccer complex at South Street Seaport, fans personalized their own T-shirts and participated in three-on-three matches.
