WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Washington Redskins defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth has been issued a warrant in connection with an alleged road rage incident, Fairfax County, Virginia police said on Friday.
Haynesworth has not been formally charged, but a warrant for simple assault has been issued, police spokeswoman Shelley Broderick told Reuters.
Broderick said a 38-year-old man told investigators he was allegedly assaulted by a person, later identified as Haynesworth, following an incident near Washington on Wednesday.
The man told police he noticed a pickup truck tailgating him and he made a hand gesture at the driver of the truck.
When the two vehicles stopped for a red light, the driver of the truck reportedly got out of his vehicle and, after an exchange of words, allegedly assaulted the other driver, Broderick said.
The victim then drove to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries, she added.
Haynesworth is not in the area, Broderick said, but arrangements have been made for the warrant to be served next week.
Haynesworth's agent, Chad Speck, told The Washington Post the player would cooperate with police.
"Albert did not assault this man and looks forward to his day in court to refute these ridiculous allegations," Speck told the newspaper's website (www.washingtonpost.com).
