Valencia acquired Paraguay striker Nelson Valdez on loan from Russian side Rubin on Tuesday, pending a physical.

Valdez, 28, spent the early part of his career in Germany with Werder Bremen and Borussia Dortmund, and has previous experience in Spain with Hercules. He has 12 goals in 59 appearances for Paraguay.

"It was a tough job sealing the (loan) because Nelson is highly valued," said Valencia sporting director Braulio Vazquez. "He is a very important player for us because he is a forward who fits very well with the players we have."

Valencia opens the 2012-13 La Liga season Sunday at Real Madrid.
