Madrid, Spain (SportsNetwork.com) - Atletico Madrid maintained its three- point lead at the summit of La Liga on Sunday after earning a point in a 1-1 draw with Malaga at the Vicente Calderon, putting their title celebration on hold for another week.

A win for the Champions League finalists would have handed them the title, but the home side struggled to create opportunities in the opening 45 minutes as the clubs went into the locker room scoreless.

Malaga opened the scoring in the 65th minute when Samuel fired it in behind Atletico goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, sending shockwaves around the Vicente Calderon.

But the hosts battled back to equalize through a tally in the 74th minute by Toby Alderweireld.

Marcos Angeleri was shown a red card for Malaga in the 88th minute, reducing the visitors to 10 men and handing some initiative to Atletico. The hosts sent numbers forward knowing that a winning goal would mean hoisting the La Liga trophy.

But a winning goal never materialized and Atletico was forced to settle for a point heading into the final weekend of the season.

The result sees Atletico improve to 89 points. They can win the league with a win or draw against Barcelona next week, while Barcelona will claim its second straight La Liga crown with a victory.

Also in Spain on Sunday, fellow title contenders Barcelona and Real Madrid both dropped points. Los Blancos fell, 2-0, to Celta Vigo without Cristiano Ronaldo, thanks to a brace from Charles, while Barcelona failed to find a winner in a scoreless stalemate with Elche.

Barcelona remains on 86 points, three behind Atletico, while Real Madrid stay in third place with 84 points and will look forward to the Champions League final against Atletico on May 24.

Iker Muniain and Imanol Agirretxe traded goals as Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad played to a 1-1 draw, while Espanyol and Osasuna also finished level at 1-1.

Sergio Escudero scored in the 70th minute to hand Getafe a 1-0 result over Sevilla, while Verza and Alexis Parreau converted penalty kicks in a 2-0 Almeria win over Granada.

In Sunday's final La Liga fixture, Juanfran scored in second-half stoppage time to hand Real Betis the victory in a wild 4-3 game against Real Valladolid.
