Texans defense seeks consistency after controlling Manning

Peyton Manning was flustered, the Colts' offensive line was confused and Joseph Addai went nowhere in Houston.

The Texans defense mostly had its way with Indianapolis in a 34-24 victory on Sunday. The Colts converted only two third downs and mustered 10 points through three quarters. It was a rare off day for them against Houston, a team they had beaten in 15 of the 16 previous meetings.

The Texans (1-0) play at Washington (1-0) this week. Houston is riding a five-game winning streak dating to last season, and the improvement of the defense is a big reason why.

Safety Bernard Pollard says the Texans' defense wanted to make a statement in the opener. Defensive end Mario Williams says the key for Houston now is consistently playing at that level every week.
