Roger Federer has been selected by Switzerland for its Davis Cup relegation playoff, but whether he actually plays next week against the Netherlands is unclear.

Federer hopes to be in the U.S. Open final in New York on Sunday. The Swiss tennis federation says he is undecided about playing five days later in Amsterdam. The lineups can change as late as one hour before the Sept. 13 draw.

The top-ranked Federer was picked along with No. 19 Stanislas Wawrinka, No. 134 Marco Chiudinelli and No. 410 Henri Laaksonen (No. 410).

Wawrinka was playing Novak Djokovic in a fourth-round match Tuesday at the U.S. Open. The 20-year-old Laaksonen has switched nationality from Finland.

Switzerland will play the Dutch on outdoor clay courts. The winner stays in the top-tier, 16-nation world group.
