Stars' Peverley won't play again this season

Dallas, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Dallas Stars forward Rich Peverley won't play again this season and will undergo a procedure to correct an irregular heartbeat.

Peverley remained hospitalized on Wednesday as he recovers from a cardiac event suffered during Monday's game against Columbus. Tests performed over the past two days have been normal.

"On behalf of my wife, Nathalie, all of my family and myself, I'd like to thank you and to thank all the people that saved my life," said Peverley in a brief statement during a Wednesday news conference. "First, I'm going to start off with Dr. Robert Dimeff, Dr. Bill Robertson, Dr. Gil Salazar and Dave Zeis, our trainer with the Dallas Stars. They all attended to me once I passed out and they saved my life and I will forever be grateful."

Peverley, who had a procedure performed during the preseason to correct an irregular heartbeat, collapsed shortly after completing a shift in the first period of Monday's game.

The surgical procedure Peverley will undergo, known as an ablation, will take place at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. It was originally scheduled to take place after the season.

"We're looking back and trying to sort out exactly why that rhythm occurred," said Dr. Robert Dimeff on Wednesday. "It's very rare to occur, but we realize that it did and we've got it in control and the plan at this point in time is he's going to go back to the Cleveland Clinic and do the definitive procedure that we've talked about and planned on for the postseason."

Peverley could have had the ablation performed before the season, but decided for another procedure that kept him sidelined for three weeks and forced him to miss the entire preseason. He was then given medication in an effort to control the heart rhythm.

The 31-year-old was held out of the Stars' game at Columbus last Tuesday following a recurrence of his heart condition, but returned two days later and recorded two assists in Dallas' 6-1 win over Vancouver.

Peverley, acquired from the Boston Bruins in July as part of the trade that also sent Stars leading scorer Tyler Seguin to Dallas, has seven goals and 23 assists this season.
