Kyle Larson needs a big day on Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and he appears headed in the right direction.
At NHMS, Larson put the No. 42 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet on top of the speed charts during the final Happy Hour round of practice before Sunday's Bad Boy Off Road 300, the second race in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.
During Happy Hour, Larson ran a best lap of 132.577 miles per hour, best of the 40 cars entered in the race. That gave him a sweep of all three practices here.
Larson comes into the New Hampshire race 15th in points and a good run here would greatly improve his chances of advancing into Round 2 of the Chase.
He will start Sunday's race on the outside of Row 3 in sixth position.
"Starting sixth is better than where I typically start at short tracks," said Larson. "The last couple of short tracks have been good for me. So, I'm looking forward to it. We made some gains, I think, with our Target Chevy at Richmond and have taken some of that stuff to here at Loudon."
Denny Hamlin of Joe Gibbs Racing put a late lap up to finish second at 132.549 mph in the No. 11 Toyota.
In Happy Hour, the driver who was third fastest was Kasey Kahne, who is not in the championship hunt. Kahne, who missed the Chase for the second consecutive season, ran a best lap of 132.4289 mph in his No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet.
Behind Kahne came the Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota of Carl Edwards, with Jimmie Johnson completing the top five in a second Hendrick Chevy.
