New York, NY – Despite having won her last two match winning streak, former world No. 1 Serena Williams has been installed as the 28th seed at the 2011 U.S. Open, which will get underway next Monday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
The three-time U.S. Open champion and former runner-up Williams is currently ranked 29th in the world after missing 11 months of action due to a series of health problems. The 29-year-old star is the women's active leader with 13 Grand Slam titles.
The top seed in New York will be current world No. 1 and 2009 U.S. Open runner-up Caroline Wozniacki. The Danish star is followed by fellow top-five seeds Vera Zvonareva, Wimbledon runner-up and former U.S. Open champ Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka and Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova. Zvonareva was last year's U.S. Open runner-up to Kim Clijsters, who will not her title this year due to injury. The former No. 1 Clijsters had won the last two championships in Flushing Meadows.
The top-10 seeds are rounded out by No. 6 French Open champion and Australian Open runner-up Li Na, Roland Garros runner-up and former French Open champ Francesca Schiavone, former Wimbledon runner-up Marion Bartoli, former French Open runner-up Samantha Stosur and rising German Andrea Petkovic.
Williams' older sister and fellow former No. 1, Venus, is currently ranked 36th in the world and will not be among the 32 seeds at the U.S. Open. The seven-time major titlist is a two-time Open champ and two-time runner-up in New York.
The ladies' singles draw for the 2011 U.S. Open will be revealed on Thursday.
