Reigning world champion Anna Chicherova of Russia won gold in the women's high jump Saturday at the London Games, while American Brigetta Barrett claimed silver.

Chicherova, who added to the bronze she won four years ago in Beijing, cleared a height of 2.05 meters, while Barrett jumped over 2.03m to grab the United States' first medal in this event since Louise Ritter won gold at the 1988 Seoul Games.

Barrett and Russia's Svetlana Shkolina both cleared the same height, but Shkolina was relegated to bronze for having missed two times before succesfully jumping 2.03m. Spain's Ruth Beitia was fifth with a best jump of 2.00m.

Belgium's Tia Hellebaut, the defending Olympic champion, finished fifth, while Chaunte Lowe of the U.S. placed sixth.
