Kansas City, MO – Kansas City Royals second baseman Chris Getz broke his left thumb in the fifth inning of Friday night's 4-2 win over the Chicago White Sox.
Getz was trying to bunt, but Chris Sale's pitch hit Getz flush on the thumb.
"The way he throws and the velocity he has you don't have that much time to react," Getz said. "Left on left just kind of rides up in on you. There wasn't much I could do."
Getz will undergo season-ending surgery Saturday.
After the game Royals manager Ned Yost said they will recall Johnny Giavotella from the minors to play second base.
Getz ends his season hitting .275 with 17 RBI in 64 games.
