Mason, Ohio – Andy Roddick was a first-round loser Monday at the $2.43 million Western & Southern Open, an ATP Masters and U.S. Open Series event.
German Philipp Kohlschreiber rallied from a set down to beat the 11th-seeded American 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 6-1 on the hardcourts at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.
The former world No. 1 Roddick was the Cincinnati champion in 2003 and 2006, and runner-up in 2005.
Twelfth-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet moved on with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) victory over Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov, while an upset came when Italian Fabio Fognini dismissed 14th-seeded Serb Viktor Troicki 6-4, 6-1.
Former Wimbledon runner-up David Nalbandian posted an opening-round win with a 6-4, 6-4 decision against Japanese qualifier Kei Nishikori. The former top- five star Nalbandian should have his hands full with 2008 Cincy champion Andy Murray in the round of 32.
In an all-American affair, qualifier Alex Bogomolov Jr. topped wild card Robby Ginepri 6-4, 6-3 on Day 2.
Additional opening-round wins came for Spanish veterans Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez, American wild card Ryan Harrison, Argentina's Juan Monaco and promising Bulgarian wild card Grigor Dimitrov. The left-handed Lopez came from behind to beat former No. 1 and fellow Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The top seeds here are also the top players in the world -- Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Murray. Federer titled here for a fourth time by edging out American Mardy Fish in last year's final. Djokovic was the runner-up here in 2008 and 2009. Murray beat Djokovic in the '08 Cincy final.

This is the final Masters event before the U.S. Open, which will commence August 29 in New York.
This week's winner will collect $496,000.
