(SportsNetwork.com) - The Colorado Rockies will try to solve their road woes on Friday night when they step into Progressive Field to open a three-game interleague series with the Cleveland Indians.
Colorado is 16-7 at Coors Field but just 12-18 on the road this season, as the team gets set to wrap up a nine-game road swing. The Rockies have hit a major league-best .344 at home, compared to .242 in opposing ballparks. They have been shut out twice during their current road trip.
The Rockies had Thursday off after suffering a 6-3 loss at Philadelphia a day earlier. With Colorado clinging to a 3-2 lead with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, left-hander Boone Logan came on to face lefties Chase Utley and Ryan Howard. After Utley singled to tie the game, Howard ended it with a walk-off shot over the wall in left-center.
Of course, the Rockies had their fair share of chances but went 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position.
"We've been lacking the big hit lately," shortstop Troy Tulowitzki said.
Cleveland has lost four in a row and is coming off Wednesday's 3-2 setback at the Chicago White Sox. After the Indians rallied to tie the score at 2-2 in the top of the ninth, an error by third baseman Mike Aviles helped open the door for a walk-off single by Chicago's Moises Sierra in the bottom of the frame. The error was the major league-leading 54th of the season for the Indians defense.
"Routine ground ball, play that's gotta be made, and I didn't make it," Aviles said. "I mean, usually make it, I'd say almost every time. But, for whatever reason, I threw the ball and didn't have anything behind it. Just messed it up, I guess."
The Tribe activated second baseman Jason Kipnis from the disabled list prior to Wednesday's game. Kipnis hit in the cleanup spot and went 0-for-4.
Toeing the rubber for Cleveland in Friday's opener is right-hander Corey Kluber, who has won three of his last four starts and owns a 2.60 ERA on the season. Most recently, he pitched seven shutout innings while striking out nine at Baltimore on Saturday. Kluber boasts a 7-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio in five May starts.
"He's obviously very comfortable using all of his pitches, attacking hitters the right way and he's got some confidence going," pitching coach Mickey Callaway said.
For Colorado, Juan Nicasio tries for his second win in a row after tossing six shutout frames at Atlanta on Saturday. The right-hander allowed only two hits to go along with five strikeouts. The Rockies have won seven of Nicasio's 10 starts this season.
The Rockies are 10-8 all-time against the Tribe, but this marks their first trip to Cleveland since 2011.
